Galway Cathedral

A monumental feature of Galway, the Cathedral is situated along the River Corrib. It's only a fews minutes walk away from The Galway City Oasis. There is a heartfelt connection too as Brenda's grandfather Brendan Holland, as mayor of Galway, officially opened this cathedral. Watch the video by Brenda below for more information!

Your host's Grandfather officially opened this Cathedral in the 1960s

Brendan Holland Senior, Brenda's Grandfather, opened the Galway Cathedral officially back in 1965. On the same day his son, Richard, was christened in the cathedral. Mona, Brenda's grandmother has provided us with many historical memories and photos of this great day for Galway along with any more pivotal historical events. In 1966, Brendan led Galway through the 50th anniversary celebrations of the 1916 rebellion. Galway railway station was officially named Ceannt Station as part of the celebrations. It was named after Eamonn Ceannt from Ballymoe, County Galway, who was one of the leaders of the 1916 rebellion. A huge parade was held on Easter Sunday of that year, featuring Siobhan McKenna, a master of ceremonies, who read the Irish Proclamation in both Irish and English at Eyre Square in Galway city centre.
